The essay highlights the bravery and contributions of Dicey Langston, a young patriot who acted as a spy during the Revolutionary War, saving lives and inspiring others with her courage.
Could you imagine taking a bullet for somebody at just 16 years old? If you happened to answer yes, then you are no different than Dicey Langston. She was a patriot girl who made it her duty to help the patriots win the war. Though she wasn't allowed to become a soldier, she found other ways to be helpful. One of these ways was to become a spy to gain information on the loyalists. I mean, who would think a little girl could be a spy?
She became a spy to aid her family, who were patriots, since she couldn't become a soldier. Most times she was tasked with going undercover and gaining information on loyalist soldiers. Such information might include battle plans, settlement locations, and how many soldiers might be in said locations. However, most times, women weren't supposed to know about these plans, but she found clever ways around this issue. These traits made her a perfect spy for the patriots as a whole.
One of the most important pieces of information she found was that there was a scheduled attack set for Little Eden, South Carolina. This was the place her father and brother sat. In response, she walked 5 miles on foot to warn them. Thanks to her efforts, everyone was able to retreat before the attack even started. So, in turn, Dicey Langston directly saved hundreds of men and women from being slain from the loyalists soldiers.
Besides saving hundreds of lives from being killed in Little Eden, she has done other things that require immense bravery. One of these acts was saving her father from being killed at loyalist hands. Before he was killed, Dicey stepped in the way of the gun stating “you would have to kill me first”. The soldiers, amused at her bravery, let her and her father live. So, not only did she save hundreds of men and women at Little Eden, but she helped install bravery inside the patriot soldiers so they could keep fighting
From becoming a spy, to saving her father from being shot, she was an asset to the patriot side. She found many ways to get involved inside of the war like saving many people from being killed from loyalists. And lastly, she helped the patriot soldiers win by showing an example of bravery and selflessness. But, the question still remains, would you take the bullet?
